CONVERGE:

A table for togetherness

Design a usable piece of furniture within the 3 archetypes of furniture.

Design Prompt:

This table is inspired by Indian families eating on the floor and making that experience more comfortable and enjoyable.

Concept + Mood Board

The concept also promotes togetherness for friends and family to work and eat together.

Phase 1: Initial Ideation

The main idea of this phase was to come up with ideas for tables that promotes time together as a group in a functional way.

Phase 2: Refined Ideas

I used this design but made one of the legs each frame straight to make it seem like the table is inviting people in. The angles of the table forces it’s users to sit in a way that promotes face-to-face interactions.

In this phase, I chose one of the designs from the first ideation stage and made small changes to have the design more functional and realistic to make.

Phase 3: Making

I then mapped out the angles on the tabletop while referencing my fusion model and used the router along a separate template to cut out the pullout table.

I created the leg frames by ensuring they were all cut at the same angle, and made a stopper to fully clamp them together after dominoing and gluing them.

To create the top form, I laminated three planks of wood together.

To ensure all of the frames were flush , I sanded them all together. I then filleted the edges to make them safe to touch and bump into.

Phase 4: Finishes

To add edge treatment, I used a hand router on all of the outer edges and chamfered them. I then used sandpaper on a wood block to hand fillet all of the corners.

I then mapped out the angles on the tabletop while referencing my fusion model and used the router along a separate template to cut out the pullout table.

To create the darker tint, I stained the main table frames and the Pullout tabletop with a Gel Hickory Stain.

FUSION MODEL

The leg frames are all at the same angle to allow for human legs to move through and around them.

Opposite stains on each part of the table to retain continuity in the design even when the pieces are away from each other.

This table has a smaller section designed to be a pullout table. It can be put flush against the table in various ways to extend the size of the table, as well as stand as it’s own smaller table for eating and drinking so the food/drinks don’t spill over to the main table.
